Freeze R Burn endurance ride (LD)

WOW...What a fun ride!

Thursday night Tracey and I packed her trailer to get ready to leave as soon as I got to the barn from work Friday night. We left the barn around 6:30ish. We stopped and ate before we got on I35. We got on the road about 7pm ish. At about 8:30 or so, we made it to the grasslands for my first AERC LD.

I have never seen TADRA that full before. I crewed for a 100 mile rider a few years ago, I think there were 150 riders at that ride. I may be wrong, but I just don't remember ever seeing it so full. I believe there were almost 180 riders at this ride. We of course, had to park on the hill. Luckily we were next to and near some folks we know. Mary Fields, Robbin Timmons, Roger Garlitz and a couple of other folks that Tracey knew. We sat up camp then went down and paid our entries and got our cards. I was 301 and Tracey was 302.

We went to bed about 10:30 but I can't tell you what time I finally got to sleep. It was SO cold. I wasn't prepared for it to be as cold as it was. I slept some, but froze most of the night. My toes hurt so bad most of the night I swear I was going to come down with frost bite on them.

We got up around 6:30am to feed the girls and start moving around as we had to vet them in at 7:30. Summer checked in with all A's and a 40 on her pulse. About 8:00 Becky showed up and we all got our feed, hay bags, snacks and drinks ready to take to the break area for after the first loop. After that we looked at a couple of vendors items then headed back to our trailers to tack up. Our time out was 9:30. Tracey and I timed out at 9:33. At about 1/2 mile into our first loop, I told Tracey that I had forgotten to raise my stirrups as I wanted to make sure that I could really stay off Summer's back for this ride as I knew we were going to be moving out faster and longer than I ever had on Summer. I tell you, everyone that passed us asked if we were okay. No one was rude at all. After I adjusted my tack, we took off. It was great, we did more cantering than I have ever done in one ride with Summer and she has really learned how to use those legs of hers. She did various gaits all day. Racking, step pacing, dog walk, flat walk, running walk, cantering, and the dreaded hard pace, which I let her do only if I could get way off of her back. I think we finished the first loop (15 miles) in 2hrs and 45 minutes.

Once we got back into TADRA, we stopped at the tank to let the girls drink. Sarah Nelzen came up to say hi and give a hug. Her hubby, Justin, was doing the 75 mile ride and she was crewing for him. We talked about electrolytes and she told me to give Summer some right then. Tracey gave Summer a full dose for me. I am real nervous about electrolytes. When I should or shouldn't use them. How much, which type. It all really confuses me. Anyway, Sarah took Summer and Amira's pulses for us and I think Summer was at a 10, so we were ready to pulse in with the checkers. I think Summer checked in at a 10 with him too. I was so happy, as I knew that meant she was not in pain. This I learned from NATRC. Anyway, we go to the vets and Amira goes to one vet and they put Summer at the opposite end with another vet. Of course this makes Summer act like a twit cause she is away from Amira and her pulse shoots up to a 16. Three of her scores goes down to a B and one down to an A-. However, I trot her out and back and her pulse drops to a 13, which Tracey said was fabulous. That meant Summer was in good condition. So I was happy about that.

After that, we take the girls up to their snacks and feed and take our break. We rode out at 1pm for our second loop. I swear, it flew by. I think we finished somewhere between 2:45 to 3:00. Summer drank pretty good during the second loop and real good when we got back to TADRA. So I gave her another dose of electrolytes per Sarah and Tracey. Since there was a long line to vet out and the girls weren't huffing and puffing, we pulsed and Summer was at a 13. Figured by the time we got to the vets it would drop further. This time Tracey said that we would go to the same vet as they would let you do that if your horses were herd bound to one another, and they did. She wished she had thought of that after the first loop but she just didn't think about it. But I didn't mind because I guess that tested Summer's CRI and she did good. Anyway, all of Summer's metabolics went back up to A's or A minues, so I was real proud of her conditioning scores.

I don't know where we came in, I know we didn't come in any where near the front but we weren't last. LOL I also know I did have fun. And I know what the motto of AERC truly means now, "To Finish Is To Win", and I am ready to do another one.

No Freeze R Burn for me...

I just couldn't do it. My tooth, jaw, gums, head, you name it, on the right side of my face, is still hurting. Not as bad as before the dentist. But I am not going to chance on paying money to have fun and ride and then be in pain. I didn't want to be miserable and I didn't want to make my friends weekend miserable by my moaning and whining. There will be another ride. I just need to get this tooth taken care of.

On the plus side, Summer is in the best shape she has been in, in a while. So I need to keep that up for the Girl Scout Scamper CTR in March. Plus I want to do the OK Land Run in March as well. So I figured I will do some good ground work with her for now. She is not real fond of plastic bags, so we will work on that. And side passing to the right has little to be desired. And I need to work on my ground mounting and off side mounting. Other than that, no real obstacle issues for her. As far as the mounting goes, those are my issues, not hers.

It is supposed to be a beautiful weekend here and I really want to get some riding in, even if I need to take some pain meds for my tooth to do it!

From a beautiful weekend to this...

The wind was HORRIBLE yesterday. I was sooo worried about my fencing at home and afraid that it would hit the ground and my dog Libby getting out. She is a Bulldog, so needless to say, I am sure if someone picked her up, I wouldn't have gotten her back. Not in the neighborhood I live in. I paid too much for that dog, but love her more than that. About 4:45pm, David called me and said Libby was still at home and the fence held up to the wind. Whew....I was so glad to see that stupid but loveable dog. She is such a ham.

I have been working Summer every night in the round pen. Trotting, gaiting, cantering, then walking to cool down. We mix it up to keep it different. So she does about two miles during our sessions. I put her surcingle on her and attach my GPS to her so I know we do about two miles in 20 minutes. She is looking good. She has lost her hay belly and her back end is looking good. We have also been doing a lot of in hand backing. I have been told that is good for her stifles as well as her back end. She seems real happy. Especially when we do her carrot stretches. I just want her ready for the Freeze R Burn on the 9th. Tracey and I got another lady named Mary to do it too. So she and I will be newbies together. She has an Arab and I know they will both do fine. With Summer being a "heavy" horse, I just have to work her a little harder to get her in shape for this. Now if I had the will power to do the same for me. Tonight, Summer gets a break, I have to clean her pen, I think they are predicting rain tomorrow so I need to get it done tonight.

Well, better get back to work.

No Iraq for David

We had the talk last night. He will not be going. I need him here and so does our daughter. I couldn't imagine what I would do if something happen to her and he was in another country. Even our daughter told him no. No amount of money is worth him not being here with us. He was okay with it. If we are not happy now with what we have, more money is not going to fix that, it may just make it worse.

I took Summer out last night and gave her a good lunging workout. Now that she is more fit, she has a lot of "go" in her. It was no problem to get her to go 20 times each way in the round pen at a trot. I used to have to really get after her to go that much, now, she just goes. We did some backing up a slight incline in hand last night 5 times to strengthen her stifle and we did our carrot stretches and leg stretches. If we are going to do an LD, we both need to be ready. That is why I am climbing the stairs in our building, to get fit.

An okay week...

This has been an okay week. I did get a little riding in Wed and Thur night. Tracey and I did a couple of miles each night around the barnyard. Summer didn't think it was fair since Tracey has two horses and I only have her, hence, she had to work both nights and Tracey's girls only got one night each.

We are supposed to go riding at Benbrook tomorrow. A conditioning ride. Summer has been on a break for the month of December so now needs to get back to work and earn her oats. I am wanting to go ahead and do an endurance ride on her. It is just a 25 miler, so they call it an LD (limited distance). I think it will be fun, but I am sure Summer will have other thoughts on that. This one is called Freez 'R Burn and is held at the LBJ Grasslands, so at least we kinda know the trails.

I am real proud of Summer. She has never been one to like to side pass to the right. Well, these past two nights we have worked on that from the saddle, and both times I have gotten her to take a couple of steps to the right. They weren't as pretty as the ones she takes to the left, but she gave effort and did it. I hate arena work, but I know I need to do it if I am going to have to train her to do little things like sidepassing to the right.
